The public base, which is interlinked with the urban space, and the public spire are the outstanding features of the project. Along the ramparts, public uses interlink with the urban space, creating a lively fabric of art, culture, and encounter. A vertical sequence of spaces unfolds over seven floors, opening outwards and upwards: terraces, roof gardens, and air spaces form a sequence of places that have an urban and scenic effect. The central idea is a vertical space—the canyon—which connects the floors visually and spatially. Attractive program areas are lined up along this spatial figure: art and exhibitions, events and conferences, bars and restaurants, fitness, and co-working.
This mix enlivens the ensemble at all times of the day and makes it a place that goes far beyond its function as a high-rise building. The canyon becomes an urban promenade – a public zone in the heart of the building.
Vertical access is provided by a series of elegant staircases and galleries that rise in front of the high-rise's green core wall. The continuous wall of vegetation forms the backbone of the canyon and translates the motif of the ramparts into the interior of the building. Plants and dripping water accompany visitors on their way up, filtering light and air and creating an atmosphere of calm and closeness to nature. The canyon is the head of the ensemble. It mediates between public urban space and vertical high-rise, between culture and everyday life, between nature and built structure. The interplay of openness and density creates places for encounter and contemplation – an urban interior that is both a stage and a retreat. The base thus becomes a living, multi-layered foundation for the ensemble – a spatial continuum that connects city, architecture, and landscape into a shared narrative.
The canyon, the forum, is not only an offering to the public, but also the multifunctional head of the event center of the adjacent 250-room hotel. (Text by Heide)
